Power outages...

Postby Fingolduin » Fri Jan 08, 2010 7:56 pm

So this is connected to my previous topic regarding my gf's rs account getting hacked. That's not really the big issue right now. Dec. 26th (the day after Christmas) I didn't see her on RS or Skype, which are our two main modes of communicating. Yeah we're in a LDR (long distance relationship) which I can go into more if you want. She got back on that Wednesday (Dec. 30th) and it turned out her house didn't have power for like 4 days. Apparently the problem was fixed... wrong. I suspect her house lost power again because I haven't heard from her since that Wednesday, and it makes sense because she logged out in the middle of our conversation (like her computer turned off). It's been like 9 days now, and I'm wondering how long it could take for power to get restored to a house. I don't know what the cause may have been: snow, ice, blown transformer, etc. She lives in western virginia, and as far as I can tell either Dominion Power or Shandendoah Electric Cooperative are the electricity providers in that area. I guess all I'm really asking for are ideas and advice, how long do you think it will take? I miss her alot, and I need some sort of 'hope' for when I get to talk to her again. Do you think after a few more days I should actually call the power company and inquire? I'm prepared to do that if it will put my mind at ease. If you need more details just ask. Thanks for your help guys. :)

How did you meet and how far away does she live from you?

When we get hit by hurricanes it can be about a month for some people to get back electricity. I looked at two news stories:

http://www.dailymail.com/Opinion/Editor ... 1001070482

Try googling her town's name and power outage or electricity or something. You could try calling the power company and pretending you live there. Even better if you have the address. Just say you're calling to see when the power will be back on. It's worth a try. The worst thing that can happen is they say they can't talk to you about it.

We met on runescape, it's actually pretty remarkable whenever I think about it. She lives in VA and I'm in ID as you know, so it's a long ways.

Ah, for some reason IE and FireFox won't open those links from daily mail, I'll try them again later. :? Anyways, thanks for the advice Bog. I think I'll try calling the power company on Monday and see what's going on. From some articles I read, it sounds like there were alot of major outages in late December, but I figured they all would have been fixed by now. It's kinda funny how back east when they get a foot of snow it's a MAJOR deal. Out here we can get 2-3 feet of snow at a time and I've never experienced a power outage in nearly 7 years living here. Now I do realize back east it melts/freezes alot so ice can be a major cause of outages. She lives a few miles outside of town, kinda rural I guess, and they usually restore power to rural homes last.

Honestly I wouldn't worry about it too much. One of the first things you should do when you start seeing someone online is to get their phone number(s). It can totally circumvent the worry that comes with these sorts of situations.

I guess you can call, but sometimes that can make you worry more, and it won't lessen the time you gotta wait. What you CAN do is try and figure out how to ask for her phone number in case it happens again. :-P

Once again Fee is on the money. Phones work during power outages :D .

Lol about the foot of snow causing power outages in VA, but ID can withstand so much more. Youre right, it's just because they aren't used to it or prepared for it. If we got a foot of snow in Houston half of us would probably die of hypothermia. Seriously, if we get a little ice on the roads the whole town shuts down, schools close, it's almost Armageddon. We can't handle ice here. We can handle the heat though. We laugh when they have a heat wave up in New York and people actually die of the heat. When it's over 100F (38C) you'll see people outside playing, mowing the grass, and stuff, but in New York they are freaking dying. But then winter comes and they laugh at us when we close the schools because of a little ice on the roads  .

Ok I did call the power company this morning, and they said there were no outages on her street currently or even in the past week or so. I think I'll just take Feeb's advice and try not to worry about it, all I can really do is wait. The telephone operator said that my gf's address had different last name registered to it as well, that is, different from her last name. They recently moved there about 3 weeks ago, and I could have the wrong address as well, so I'm not gonna worry too much about it. You just have to trust people sometimes. I'm gonna try to think up possible reasons why it's taking so long for her to come back, just to ease my troubled mind. If you guys can think of any, let me know, even if they are ridiculous I think it will make me feel better. XP

I don't think trying to trick yourself into reasons why she isn't contacting you is terribly healthy, either. Sometimes you just gotta accept that she isn't contacting you for her own reasons, and deal with it. Speculation is your enemy in this case, just trust me. And trust her. She'll contact you when she can, so chillax.

You have her address but not her phone number?

Yeah. :P She moved from the UK only about a month ago so her phone still has a UK #. And I never really needed it because we talked every day via IM or runescape. Ok Feeb I'll try to take your advice. :)

Was she born in the UK and grew up there?

Yup. She moved to the US with her dad and stepmom. They were originally gonna move after she graduated high school, but she was having some family issues in the UK and had to get away from her biological mom. I hope everything works out for her over here. :)
